What do we need to do when we get this error trying to open a Box document in a desktop app (Word, Exel, Powerpoint)?

First, make sure Excel is already installed via Kandji Self-Service.

The next thing to check is to make sure the storage account is provisioned in Open / Add a Place. This error can still occur even if Box has been added as a location, but if it has not, add it and this error should be resolved.

The error also says we may need to check 'we have the necessary permissions'. This isn't usually accurate because this error will pop up for files we have created ourselves, or otherwise already have permission.

This is a common error that results from a problem with the authentication token used for the Box - Office integration tool. The root cause of this issue is still being investigated, but it is usually observed after an Office app has been updated or some other action that has caused this feature to break.

How to fix this problem - Remove and re-add Box account to Office App

Open Excel (or Word)

Excel (or Word) > File > Open (⌘ O)

In the Open dialogue, the window should look like this.

If your Open dialogue looks like this, click "Online Locations" to bring it up. (If you see the window above already, ignore this step)

Next, click "Manage Storage Accounts"

Now, click the X to remove Box. Then, click "Remove" on the warning that pops up. This will not affect your data.

Add Box, use SSO sign in to verify and follow authorization steps for Okta.

Click the "Grant Access to Box" button when you reach this page.

You should now see Box on the left side of the window:

Finally, Quit the Office application you are in (⌘ Q)

Attempt to open the file using "Desktop" again on Box.com. It should now open without error.
